About “Suicide Sugar”

For single number four, Gran Fenwick resurrects 90s guitar-based dance music: The Stone Roses, “Leisure”-era Blur, and especially the Chester band Mansun, who topped the UK charts in 1997 but remain little known in North America. These bands took the “Madchester” drum beat and put heavy distorted guitars over top. The guitarscape is influenced by a trio of blockbuster 90s alternative albums: Stone Temple Pilots’ “Purple,” R.E.M.’s “Monster,” and Collective Soul’s self-titled album.

Suicide Sugar is the recorded debut of local Toronto troublemaker Makinz (they/them) who has been on the scene stirring things up for a while now but has never sang on an official release before. Performing “Rarin 2 Go” live at the Bovine Sex Club in Toronto with Makinz and their polyamorous boyfriend on stage, Ian was struck with Makinz’s sheer volume and shamelessness doing the backing vocals.

Working with Makinz for a few weeks, the two singers came up with a vocal part, riffing on the title phrase, which could now be considered Makinz’s nickname, living up to their reputation as an alluring, tumultuous force of nature.

The music video was directed by another trans community member, Brian McLellan, Makinz’s close personal friend. The video shoot took place at a loft party where a who’s who of the Toronto music scene showed up to be partygoers. Buffy-esque vampires and a committed 90s aesthetic make for another memorable Gran Fenwick clip following the alien romance of “Armour Hill” and slice of Torontonian musician life in “Rarin 2 Go”.

Artist info

Gran Fenwick is Ian Strung and a rotating cast of vocal collaborators. Ian Strung is a songwriter, alternative indie rock artist, encyclopedic music historian and syndicated radio host based in Ontario, Canada.

Post-pandemic, Toronto rock music lifer Ian Strung came back onto the scene as a radio host. The P.O. Box Radio Show with Postman Dan is syndicated to markets across Canada and is heard around the world. Ian hosts the “Cancon Classics” spot, where every week a guest artist covers a Canadian song. The spot has been going for four years, getting the wider Canadian music scene in on the fun. But back in 2022 when it started, Ian was recording the songs himself. Those 18 tracks debuted on the air and were introduced by the original artists, who all gave enthusiastic praise for Ian’s interpretations (including Barenaked Ladies, Prozzak, Sloan, By Divine Right, and Klaatu, among others). This was Gran Fenwick’s “Cancon Classics” album, a passionate tribute to Canada’s rich alternative rock history.

A year after its release, “Sucks To Be You” featuring Morgan Thompson-Reid topped the New Music Top 40 for four weeks on Peterborough, Ontario’s Pet Rock Radio. The song also charted in the top 10 on Only Rock Radio in Spain for five weeks.

Ian’s subsequent singles were reimaginings of lesser known Canadian artists. Respectively, “Forever” spent six weeks in the Top 20 at Only Rock Radio and “Armour Hill” (a duet with Neon Bloom’s Jen Simpson) made it to #2 and hung out in the Top 40 of Pet Rock Radio for a stunning 30 weeks.

Starting with these two singles and continuing at an even greater pace with his first original under the Gran Fenwick name, “Rarin 2 Go” (featuring Jerkoff Diary), Ian has been giving his music playful video treatments and all three songs have received radio airplay worldwide, including Canada, the U.S.A., Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, the UK, Ireland, Spain, France, South Africa, Germany, Malaysia and more.
