About
Rowan Brown, aka (Santa) has been in the music business for many years. The name Santa came about while living in Vineyard town of Kingston, Jamaica. At Christmas time, he would dress up like Santa Claus to put a smile on people’s faces. Michael Bennet from the musical group home T4 was one of his mentors and started to call him Santa; from there, the name stuck. As a child back on the Island of Jamaica, he was involved in many things and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He was also heavily involved in sports as a spectator or participant. One of his favorite hangout spots was the House of Dread, where he watched some of his mentors play soccer, like Bob Marley, Skill Cole, and many others.
Reggae music plays a significant role in Santa’s life, listening to the best of the best and even watching Byron Lee rehearse a few doors down from where he was living. What stood out the most for him was having a front-row view of the Bob Marley One Love Peace concert at the National Stadium. He was fascinated with playing the bass guitar but was too young at the time. He was also a member of the Jamaica Softball team and went on to represent Jamaica in the world's classic Softball tournament in the Dominican Republic.
As a music lover at a young age, Santa constantly changed lyrics to people’s songs to make people laugh. He remembered what one of his mentors told him: music is destiny. Hence, he decided to make a move towards music, and also keep in mind and remember what other mentors used to say, never give up, always keep trying.
His first recording/song, titled (Nuffniceness) was picked up by a major label, Super Power Records, in Brooklyn, New York, which didn’t do so well because he was inexperienced and had no one to guide him. Santa went on to join up with a reggae band in South Florida called R.P.I, which stands for Reggae for the Public Interest, where he would get hands-on experience. He would help to set up equipment on stage, do a sound check, backing vocals, and fill in from time to time playing bass guitar; members of the band welcome him with open arms with the likes of lead singer Clyde Maraugh, Frankie Maraugh, Gary Maraugh, Basha King and Gimmy Jagessar. With the passing of Clyde a few years later, the band ended.
Santa went on to write his next song titled (Clean up the Country) a song about political violence in Jamaica. He couldn't get any record company to market this song for him. Their reasons were that it was a political song and that they did not want to get involved. Eventually, he tried doing it independently, but his finances weren't enough for promotion and marketing. Santa moved to the UK to study music at the Goldsmith University/College in London; he then went on to tour Europe and write songs for charity, such as a song titled (Safe Sex) to combat the war on Aids. Santa is always coming up with new ideas,
Santa is a positive person who is always working on new materials. He wants to carry the torch from his mentor, saying that clean lyrics are the way to go. Santa is currently working on his latest single, Black2Love.
